The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared its intention to hold a nationwide protest on Tuesday, 4th February 2025, in response to the proposed 50 per cent increase in telecommunication tariffs.
In a statement issued at the conclusion of its National Administrative Council (NAC) meeting in Abuja yesterday, signed by Congress President, Joe Ajaero, the NLC confirmed that the protest will occur in all 36 states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The NLC’s communiqué emphasized that the one-day rally is a collective stand against the steep tariff hike, which the Congress views as unjustifiable. “This rally aims to express our strong opposition to this arbitrary tariff increase, which would place an even heavier burden on a population already struggling with a minimum wage of just N70,000. Nigerians are already contending with soaring petrol prices, high food costs, rising electricity tariffs, and general inflation,” the statement read.
The Congress further instructed all affiliated unions and state councils to begin preparations for the protest. “We encourage our civil society partners to join this effort,” it added. “We call upon all Nigerian workers, those in the informal sector, and the public at large to stand in solidarity against this unjust policy.”
The NLC also demanded an immediate halt to the proposed tariff increase and urged the Federal Government, the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), and the National Assembly to engage in dialogue with relevant stakeholders to reconsider the proposed adjustment in light of the country’s economic challenges.
The Congress described the 50 per cent tariff hike as not only insensitive and unjustifiable but also as a direct affront to Nigerian workers and the general public, already burdened by the effects of government policies that have contributed to widespread economic hardship.
The NLC warned that if its demands are not addressed, it will escalate its response, including the possibility of a nationwide boycott of telecommunication services and further mass protests. “We will not hesitate to withdraw our services in opposition to policies that deepen poverty and inequality,” it stated.
Finally, the NLC reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rights of Nigerian workers and citizens, vowing to continue its fight against policies that undermine the welfare and dignity of the people. “Nigerians must unite and act to prevent further economic oppression. We must resist any policy that prioritizes corporate profits over the well-being of the people,” the Congress concluded.
