When Professor Adenike Oyinlola Osofisan (née Adedipe) was born into the Elemo Adedipe Dynasty of Akure Kingdom, Ondo State, little did anyone know that she would grow to become a pioneering force in a field then dominated by men and largely foreign to Africa.
Today, as she marks her 76th birthday, her legacy remains etched in history: she is the first woman in Africa to become a Professor of Computer Science.
Born on 11 March 1950, Professor Osofisan’s journey to academic greatness began in the classrooms of Fiwasaye Girls’ Grammar School, Akure, and Comprehensive High School, Ayetoro. Her brilliance earned her a Federal Government scholarship to study at the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, where she obtained her first degree in Computer Science.
She proceeded to the Georgia Institute of Technology, USA, where she earned a Master’s degree in Information and Computer Science, further solidifying her expertise in a field that was still in its infancy globally. She then returned to Nigeria and obtained an MBA in Accounts and Finance from the University of Ibadan, graduating with the best result in her class.
Professor Osofisan’s rise to the pinnacle of academia was marked by a series of firsts. She became the first Nigerian woman to earn a Doctorate in Computer Science and, more remarkably, the first woman on the African continent to ascend to the rank of Professor of Computer Science.
In a career spanning decades, she has inspired generations of young Nigerians, especially women—to pursue careers in technology, a field that continues to shape the modern world.
Beyond her academic achievements, Professor Osofisan has served as a mentor, researcher, and advocate for the advancement of computer science education in Nigeria. She has also been a voice for women in technology, championing initiatives to bridge the gender gap in science and engineering.
Her contributions have been recognised across the continent, and she remains one of Africa’s foremost female academics.
