Nigeria’s Global Role Unshaken – VP Shettima Counters Kemi Badenoch’s Remarks

Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed Nigeria’s importance as a leading black nation globally, responding to comments made by UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Kemi Badenoch, who previously criticized Nigeria’s leadership. Speaking at the 10th Annual Migration Dialogue in Abuja, Shettima emphasized the nation’s demographic potential and cultural influence, reiterating its significance in shaping the identity of black people worldwide.

Acknowledging Badenoch’s success as a British political leader of Nigerian descent, Shettima expressed pride in her accomplishments but criticized her harsh commentary on Nigeria. In a pointed remark, he said Badenoch could “remove Kemi from her name” if she wished but could not erase her Nigerian heritage. He noted that Nigeria remains a source of pride for millions of Africans.

Shettima also highlighted Nigeria’s demographic importance, citing projections that the country will become the third-most populous nation globally by 2050. He stressed the need to leverage this population growth for economic development while ensuring the protection of migrant rights worldwide.

The vice president assured that the Nigerian government is committed to improving the country’s global image and addressing challenges such as economic development, leadership, and international relations. He described migration as an inevitable global phenomenon and emphasized the need for mutual respect among nations when addressing related issues.

Shettima concluded by emphasizing Nigeria’s resilience and ability to overcome its challenges, asserting that the country’s status as a global black powerhouse remains indisputable.
