Nigeria Customs Upgrades ICT Unit to Department, Appoints DCG KI Adeola as Head

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has officially elevated its Information and Communication Technology (ICT) unit to a full department, appointing Deputy Comptroller-General (DCG) KI Adeola to lead the newly established ICT-Modernization Department. This key development was announced in a statement released by Abdullahi Maiwada, Chief Superintendent of Customs, on Wednesday, and posted on the official X (formerly Twitter) account of the NCS.

The decision to upgrade the ICT unit was first approved during the NCS Board’s 59th Regular Meeting in May 2024. DCG Adeola’s appointment was confirmed at the 60th Regular Meeting on September 10, 2024, chaired by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Economy, Wale Edun.

According to the statement, the new department will spearhead digital transformation initiatives within the NCS, aimed at modernizing its operations. “This strategic upgrade is vital in the ongoing modernization efforts within the NCS,” the statement noted. DCG Adeola will be supported by an Assistant Comptroller-General and five Comptrollers to ensure the effective implementation of modernization initiatives.

In addition to Adeola’s appointment, the NCS Board also approved the promotion of O.A. Alajogun to the position of Deputy Comptroller-General, along with five new Assistant Comptroller-Generals: I.G. Umar, M.M. Tiley-Gyado, B.A. Makinde, O.A. Salefu, and T. Bomadi. These promotions were made in response to the statutory retirement of senior officers, in compliance with the Federal Character Policy, as outlined in Section 14(4) of the Nigeria Service Act, 2023.

The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, congratulated the newly appointed officers and encouraged them to intensify their efforts in revenue generation, trade facilitation, and combating smuggling activities across the country.

The upgrade of the ICT unit to a full department comes at a crucial time for Nigeria’s digital landscape. Recently, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has experienced technical issues with its online passport application platform, leading to frustrations for Nigerians attempting to access services. With the establishment of the new ICT-Modernization Department, the NCS is expected to address these challenges, improving efficiency and reducing delays for users.

This move is part of a broader push for digital transformation across government agencies, ensuring that modern technology is leveraged to enhance service delivery and operational efficiency.
