In a significant move to bolster national security through digital innovation, the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), Abuja Chapter, has proposed a strategic collaboration with the Ministry of Defence, aimed at bridging the gap between Nigeria’s defense requirements and the country’s burgeoning technology ecosystem.
The proposal was presented during a high-level courtesy visit by Andrew Abu the Chairman of the NCS Abuja Chapter to the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, in Abuja.
According to NCS, the meeting underscored the urgent need for technology-driven, intelligence-led solutions to address the evolving security landscape in Nigeria.
The umbrella body of all computer professionals in Nigeria recognizes that contemporary threats, ranging from terrorism and banditry to cyber espionage and critical infrastructure vulnerabilities, require more than traditional kinetic responses. Thus, the body is advocating for the deployment of indigenous digital solutions.
“As Nigeria navigates increasingly complex security challenges, it has become evident that modern security threats require technology-driven, intelligence-led, and locally adaptable solutions,” stated the NCS Chairman.
He added that the Nigeria Computer Society stands ready to partner with the Ministry of Defence in deploying digital systems that strengthen national security and protect lives.
The proposed collaboration focuses on four critical pillars where Nigeria’s tech ecosystem can support the Ministry of Defence. The first pillar is National Cyber Defence, which involves establishing robust cybersecurity frameworks, threat intelligence systems, and Security Operations Centres. Additionally, the initiative prioritizes AI-powered surveillance by utilizing facial recognition, drone analytics, and predictive security systems to stay ahead of criminal activities. Another key area is Smart City Security, which aims to implement intelligent transportation and emergency response coordination using Abuja as a pilot model.
Finally, the collaboration emphasizes Defence-Tech Innovation by creating a pipeline for homegrown technology to solve unique local security bottlenecks.
The visit also served as a formal briefing on the upcoming “Abuja Technology & Digital Economy Week 2026,” scheduled for November 25–27, 2026. Under the theme “Energizing Smart Mobility: Enabling the Future of Smart Cities,” the event will feature a “Technology Ecosystem Dialogue” aimed at exploring how smart urban governance can enhance public safety.
The NCS invited the Ministry of Defence to participate as a strategic partner and keynote institution, emphasizing that the future of internal security is inextricably linked to smart city infrastructure and real-time AI analytics.
By fostering a defense-tech innovation partnership, the NCS believes Nigeria can leverage its immense indigenous talent to build resilient, technologically advanced systems. This collaboration seeks to transform Abuja into a flagship “Smart Secure City” model, providing a blueprint for urban security across the federation.
