President Tinubu Approves Six-Month Tenure Extension for Customs Comptroller-General Adeniyi
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has granted a six-month extension to the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, allowing him to remain in office until February 2027.

The announcement was made on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, with the extension set to take effect following the expiration of Adeniyi’s current term on August 1, 2026.

According to the Presidency, the additional time will enable Adeniyi to consolidate ongoing reforms and complete strategic initiatives focused on trade facilitation, border management, and revenue generation.

A key priority during the extended period is the implementation of the National Single Window project, a flagship initiative designed to streamline trade procedures, reduce congestion at ports, improve operational efficiency, and enhance government revenue.

The Presidency further noted that the extension would facilitate a smooth leadership transition within the Customs Service while reinforcing institutional stability.

Adeniyi is expected to collaborate closely with the Nigeria Customs Service Board on critical personnel matters. These include the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller and the retirement of personnel who have either reached 60 years of age or completed 35 years of service, in accordance with public service regulations.

The tenure extension reflects the Federal Government’s continued confidence in Adeniyi’s leadership since his assumption of office in June 2023. Under his guidance, the Service has advanced reforms aimed at modernising operations, enhancing compliance, facilitating legitimate trade, and strengthening revenue collection.

Adeniyi, an alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University, began his career with the Nigeria Customs Service in the late 1980s. He steadily progressed through the ranks, attaining the position of Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023 before his appointment as Comptroller-General in June 2023.

With this latest extension, Adeniyi is expected to complete ongoing institutional reforms and establish a foundation for an orderly leadership transition in February 2027.
