The Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) has emphasized the need for authority and control in mining and data usage to maximize data value and reduce associated costs and risks. Prof. Umar Danbatta, the Executive Vice-Chairman (EVC) of NCC, made this assertion during his keynote address at the Nigeria Digital Sense Forum, hosted by ITRealm in Lagos.
The forum focused on the theme of “5G: Data Governance, Safety, and Security in Nigeria” whereby NCC aims to ensure effective regulation and governance in the realm of data, recognizing its critical importance in the digital landscape.
The Executive Vice-Chairman (EVC) of NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, represented by Dr Chukwudi Diugu, Head, New Media and Information Security, NCC recognizes Nigeria as a technologically advanced nation as the introduction of 5G technology has presented significant prospects and hurdles, particularly concerning data management, safety, and protection.
He notes that the implementation of 5G technology offers advanced functionalities that can greatly improve communication services in Nigeria, contributing to the country’s socio-economic progress and the realization of a National Digital Economy.
The President of Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), Prof. Adesina Shodiya, emphasizes the safe use of internet and technology while the Chief Executive Officer, Wisdom Computers Mr Francis Uzor highlighted advocacy, active digital citizenship, monitoring and accountability, digital inclusion among others as roles of citizens.
The Lead Consulting Strategist of Digital Sense Africa, Mr. Remmy Nweke, emphasizes that participants from various sectors convene to address and find solutions to the issues related to internet governance, security, and the socioeconomic effects of internet usage. He specifically highlighted the forum’s attention towards students, young individuals, women, and community-based organizations.
