Federal Government Urges NBC to Emphasize Stakeholder Engagement, Beyond Sanctions and Fines

The Federal Government has urged the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to shift the prevailing perception of the organization solely being associated with penalties and fines.

During a recent visit to the commission, Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, emphasized the need for the NBC to prioritize engaging stakeholders to prevent violations of the Broadcasting Code. He underscored the significance of enhancing public awareness about the commission’s role, beyond its punitive actions.

Idris lauded the ongoing efforts to amend the NBC Act in the National Assembly, highlighting the necessity to consider additional aspects that were overlooked during the commission’s establishment.

Balarabe llelah, the Director-General of the NBC, revealed that the commission oversees a substantial network of offices and staff across various states, actively monitoring a multitude of radio and television stations. He also outlined the warnings and penalties issued by the commission in both 2022 and 2023, shedding light on the challenges faced by broadcasters, including a considerable debt profile.

Furthermore, llelah emphasized the NBC’s commitment to advancing the digital broadcasting experience, with initiatives such as the SIMULCRYPT project, aiming to expedite Nigeria’s transition to digital broadcasting.

The publication of delinquent licensees’ names in national dailies, as a means to address outstanding debts, was also highlighted by the NBC.
