Nigeria has finally added a new security layer to its .ng internet domain with the deployment of Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC), bringing to a close a process that first began in 2011.
The Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) announced it has activated DNSSEC across the .ng domain, enabling the country’s internet addresses to be authenticated and shielded from cyber threats. The move is aimed at boosting trust, encouraging local adoption, and keeping revenue within Nigeria instead of flowing to foreign platforms.
Speaking at the launch, NiRA President Adesola Akinsanya explained that the initiative is designed to prevent attackers from rerouting users to fraudulent websites, a danger that has grown as more activities move online.
“The successful deployment and unveiling of DNSSEC on the .ng domain represents a defining moment for Nigeria’s internet ecosystem,” Akinsanya said.
The technology addresses a long-standing vulnerability in the country’s digital infrastructure. The internet’s system for converting website names into numerical addresses was originally built on trust, but criminals have found ways to exploit that trust. DNSSEC introduces a verification step, confirming that users accessing a .ng website arrive at the legitimate destination rather than a counterfeit site.
If attackers manage to take control of a domain’s routing, they can send traffic elsewhere without ever breaching the website itself. DNSSEC is intended to close that loophole.
“This achievement did not happen overnight. It is a result of years of commitment, collaboration and shared vision,” said Adebiyi Oladipo, Vice Chair of ICANN’s ccNSO.
The DNSSEC system has now been fully signed and is currently under monitoring, with a phased rollout planned for registrars and domain owners. The upgrade aligns Nigeria with international standards and bolsters confidence in local digital services.
Adoption, the bigger problem
Discussions at the event also touched on the low usage of the .ng domain among Nigerians. Awareness remains limited, and participants noted that the media has a crucial role in changing this perception.
Billions still leaving the country
Beyond perception, the economic impact is significant. NiRA revealed that Nigeria loses billions of naira annually to foreign domain registration and hosting services, as businesses opt for .com addresses and host their platforms overseas. Stakeholders argued that these funds should remain within the country, particularly as local data centres now have the capacity to support large-scale hosting.
NiRA also confirmed plans to collaborate with agencies such as the Corporate Affairs Commission to link business registration more closely with domain ownership.
What comes next
NiRA is now pushing for broader adoption, calling on banks, telecom operators, government agencies, and e-commerce platforms to enable DNSSEC and fully transition into the .ng space.
“This unveiling is not just about technology; it is about building trust in Nigeria’s digital future,” said Oluwaseyi Onasanya, NiRA’s Chief Operating Officer.
