Nigeria’s technology ecosystem is witnessing a remarkable transformation as the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) strengthens its collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). According to NITDA’s Director General, Kashifu Inuwa CCIE, this partnership is shaping Nigeria into one of Africa’s most vibrant hubs for innovation and entrepreneurship.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Survey on the Digitisation of Supply Chains in Small-Scale Nigerian Farms, organised by AGROVESTO, a JICA-funded Agritech startup and beneficiary of NITDA’s iHatch Incubation Programme Cohort 2, Inuwa highlighted the impact of the partnership on Nigeria’s socio-economic growth. Represented by Dr. Amina Sambo-Magaji, Deputy Director, e-Government and Digital Economy Development Department, he described the collaboration as a “cornerstone for Nigeria’s socio-economic transformation.”
The NITDA boss explained that Nigeria is now home to a fast-rising community of young entrepreneurs who are harnessing technology to address local challenges with global relevance. He pointed to the success of homegrown fintech giants such as Paystack, Flutterwave, and Paga, which have revolutionised financial services, driven inclusion, and empowered millions of Nigerians.
Central to this progress is the iHatch incubation programme — a joint initiative between NITDA and JICA — which equips startups with mentorship, training, seed funding, and ecosystem support across diverse sectors. Inuwa further noted that the recently enacted Nigeria Startup Act is lowering barriers for innovators by offering tax incentives, simpler registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), government-backed grants, and the creation of innovation hubs, technology parks, and regulatory sandboxes.
“These interventions are designed to stimulate investment, nurture talent, and position Nigerian startups for global competitiveness,” Inuwa said. “Through strategic partnerships such as the one we enjoy with JICA, we are laying a strong foundation for sustainable growth, inclusive development, and global recognition. Nigerian innovations will not only solve local challenges but inspire the world.”
Chief Representative of JICA in Nigeria, Mr. Ishigame Kenji, also commended AGROVESTO for their creativity and dedication in implementing the project, urging them to expand the initiative to more farmers across the country. On his part, AGROVESTO’s Co-founder and CEO, Bayo Adewoye, praised Nigerian farmers for their resilience and their critical role in strengthening national food security.
