Millions of Nigerian phone users may soon be unable to access WhatsApp, as the messaging platform’s parent company, Meta, has announced that support for several outdated mobile devices will end on May 5, 2025.
According to Meta, the decision to phase out support for these older devices is aimed at maintaining data security, improving app stability, and aligning with the performance requirements of modern operating systems.
Affected iPhone models include those running below iOS 15.1, such as the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, which cannot upgrade beyond iOS 12.5.7. On the Android side, WhatsApp will no longer function on several legacy models, including Samsung Galaxy S3, Note 2, Ace 3, and S4 Mini; Motorola Moto G (1st Gen), Moto E (2014), and Razr HD; HTC One X+, Desire 500, and Desire 601; LG Optimus G and L90; Nexus 4; and Sony Xperia Z, SP, T, and V.

Meta earlier discontinued support for Android KitKat (4.4) on January 1, 2025. Now, the company is advising users to switch to newer devices running at least Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or iOS 15.1 to retain access to WhatsApp services.
Users are also encouraged to back up their chat histories before transitioning to a new device to avoid losing important data. The move will affect both individual users and small businesses using WhatsApp Business for communication.
