Renowned lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Prof. Mike Ozekhome, has called on Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, to prioritize the rehabilitation of public secondary schools across the state. Ozekhome made this appeal during the commissioning of a 10-room corpers’ lodge at St. Peter Grammar School, Agenebode, facilitated by the St. Peter Old Boys Association on Saturday.
Lamenting the deteriorating state of secondary schools in Edo, Prof. Ozekhome decried years of government neglect, which he believes have diminished the welfare of teachers and the overall quality of education. He noted that many schools now rely heavily on youth corps members for teaching staff, a sharp contrast to past decades when teaching was a lifelong, respected profession.
“For too long, successive governments in Edo State have ignored secondary schools and the welfare of their teachers,” Ozekhome said. “Today, we see mostly youth corps members in schools, who come and go without continuity. In our time, teaching was a profession people embraced with pride, with many dedicating 20 to 25 years to it. Instead, the government focuses on white elephant projects for public applause while ignoring the real institutions that produce future leaders.”
Ozekhome urged Governor Okpebholo to take immediate action to rescue secondary schools, particularly those established in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, which have fallen into disrepair. He called for better teacher welfare packages and the renovation of dilapidated school infrastructure.

“I appeal to the new government to give secondary schools a new face, rebuild them, and make teaching a respectable and comfortable profession once more,” Ozekhome added.
The corpers’ lodge, built by the St. Peter Old Boys Association, was spearheaded by Prof. Ozekhome, a proud member of the school’s 1974 graduating set. The facility was designed to provide accommodation for corps members assigned to teach at the school.
Ozekhome also rallied other alumni of St. Peter Grammar School to contribute towards the school’s revival, emphasizing the importance of remembering and giving back to one’s alma mater.
“Let us join hands to support our alma mater. A river that forgets its source dries up. Many of us owe our success today to the foundation we received in schools like this. After primary school, it is in secondary school that you develop and internalize values and knowledge. I urge all of us to work together to rebuild this school and renew its dilapidated structures,” Ozekhome said.
The event highlighted the need for collective action and community-driven efforts to support education, with Prof. Ozekhome setting an example through his advocacy and contributions.
