NITDA Urges Nigerians to Embrace Cyber Hygiene for a Safer Digital Future

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has called on Nigerians to take personal responsibility for their online safety as part of activities marking this year’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

With the theme “Cyber Hygiene for a Safer Tomorrow,” the agency emphasized that while technology continues to transform daily life, it also brings an increasing number of cyber threats that can only be mitigated through collective awareness and individual vigilance.

In a statement signed by Mrs. Hadiza Umar, Director, Corporate Communications and Media Relations, NITDA noted that the rise of cyberattacks, scams, and data breaches underscores the urgent need for citizens to adopt safe online habits. It stressed that every internet user has a role to play in protecting personal and organizational data from malicious actors.

The agency urged Nigerians to observe basic cyber hygiene practices such as using strong and unique passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, regularly updating software and devices, backing up important files, and avoiding suspicious links or attachments from unknown sources.

NITDA further advised the public to be cautious about sharing personal or financial information online, noting that cybercriminals often exploit carelessness and ignorance to launch attacks.

According to the agency, ensuring a secure and digitally resilient Nigeria depends on the collective efforts of individuals, businesses, and government institutions.

“Cyber hygiene is not only a personal responsibility but a shared duty,” NITDA stated. “When individuals protect themselves, they also safeguard their families, workplaces, and the broader digital community.”

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to promoting cybersecurity education and best practices across all sectors, calling on Nigerians to “stay alert, click wisely, and stay safe online.”
