The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has taken proactive steps to enhance data protection initiatives by signing two Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with key regulatory agencies: the National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC) and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN).

The MoU signings, held at the headquarters of SMEDAN and NLRC, respectively, were attended by notable representatives including Dr. Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner/CEO of NDPC, Mr. Lanre Gbajabiamila, Director General of NLRC, and Mr. Charles Odii, DG of SMEDAN.
The partnership with SMEDAN focuses on promoting data protection within the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) ecosystem, which comprises approximately 40 million SMEs in Nigeria. The agreement establishes a collaborative framework, including the formation of a working group dedicated to capacity building in data protection. This initiative aims to educate SMEs on implementing necessary measures to safeguard data privacy effectively.
Dr. Olatunji expressed optimism about the implementation of the MoUs, emphasizing that the trusted use of data is paramount for sustainable growth. He highlighted the potential for exponential growth within the SME sector through enhanced trust and confidence in data transactions.

Similarly, the MoU with NLRC strengthens collaboration between the two commissions and formalizes their commitment to upholding data protection laws within the gaming ecosystem. Mr. Gbajabiamila commended NDPC’s efforts and expressed readiness to collaborate on joint awareness campaigns and capacity building initiatives.
Mr. Odii of SMEDAN underscored the importance of data protection compliance for international business readiness, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to sensitizing and upskilling small businesses across Nigeria.
These partnerships represent significant milestones in NDPC’s mission to promote data protection and privacy across diverse sectors in Nigeria. By fostering collaborations with key stakeholders, NDPC aims to uphold individuals’ rights and ensure responsible handling of personal data in line with regulatory frameworks.
