NDPC Affirms Nigeria’s Ability to Regulate Artificial Intelligence

Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner for the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), has revealed that Nigeria has the capacity to establish regulations governing emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI). Olatunji emphasized that the NDPC is actively involved in formulating an AI strategy for the country.

This statement comes in the wake of calls for Nigeria to develop a national strategy to harness the potential of AI for sustainable development, as articulated by the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani. The goal is to pioneer ethical and inclusive AI innovations that enhance welfare and create opportunities for all citizens through collaborative leadership.

Olatunji highlighted the significance of the recently enacted Data Protection Act in safeguarding the interests of Nigerians amidst the growing influence of emerging technologies globally. He made these remarks during a ‘Data Protection Training for Data Protection Officer, Processors, and Controllers,’ organized by the NDPC in collaboration with the African Union, European Union Digital for Development Hub Project, and the GIZ Digital Transformation Centre.

The NDPC commissioner emphasized the foresight of the Nigerian legislation in addressing the challenges posed by emerging technologies, including IoT, robotics, virtual reality, and AI. He emphasized that the law empowers the NDPC to issue regulations to oversee developments in these technologies, ensuring that the regulatory framework remains adaptable to the evolving landscape.
