NBC and NCC Launch Major Digital Switch-Over (DSO) Initiative

In a groundbreaking collaboration, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) have announced a joint initiative to facilitate Nigeria’s transition to digital broadcasting. The partnership, unveiled at a press conference in Abuja, represents a significant stride in advancing the nation’s media and telecommunications sectors.

NBC Director General, Charles Ebuebu, highlighted the importance of this collaboration in driving the Digital Switch-Over (DSO) project. He emphasized that the President’s approval of a grant for this initiative underscores a commitment to technological innovation and economic growth. “This intervention reflects the President’s visionary leadership and our dedication to ensuring every Nigerian has access to superior broadband services, integrating them into the digital economy,” Ebuebu stated. He further described the DSO project as a transformative force poised to generate jobs, stimulate economic growth, and elevate the media industry.

As part of the initiative, NBC plans to launch an extensive public awareness campaign to educate citizens on the new regulations and the benefits of the DSO. Additionally, NBC will establish content production studios across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones in partnership with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the FreeTV APP. This effort includes developing a mobile app for FreeTV, enabling users to stream content and access video-on-demand services.

NCC Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, stressed the necessity of adapting to evolving content consumption trends. “We must recognize that most content will now be consumed on demand and in real time. Our role is to ensure that data consumption is supported by maintaining high-quality connections and efficient internal data management,” Maida said.

The joint efforts of NBC and NCC aim to create a more inclusive and technologically advanced media landscape in Nigeria, promising significant digital benefits for the nation.
