The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani during the Zenith Bank Tech Fair 2023 in Lagos, revealed the Ministry’s remarkable achievement in identifying over 6,000 Nigerian AI researchers across the world. This discovery is pivotal to Nigeria’s ambition of becoming a frontrunner in Artificial Intelligence, as these researchers are expected to play a crucial role in deploying AI across various sectors and fostering job creation within the country.

Dr. Tijani emphasized the Ministry’s overarching objective to leverage AI in revolutionizing Nigeria’s economic landscape, aiming to enhance productivity through the strategic deployment of smart infrastructure.
The process of identifying these researchers involved a meticulous approach. The Ministry systematically combed through academic publications worldwide, employing sophisticated technology to discern Nigerian names within the vast AI research landscape. This initiative was a foundational step in reimagining Nigeria’s AI strategy, enabling the country to harness the potential of this technology while safeguarding against its potential pitfalls.

Furthering their commitment to AI development, the Ministry is actively supporting companies interested in fostering local AI job opportunities. Additionally, the government plans to announce 45 startups selected for empowerment through its AI Research Scheme, wherein each startup or researcher focusing on AI will be awarded N5 million to further their innovative endeavors.
This concerted effort by the Nigerian government underscores its dedication to fostering a vibrant AI ecosystem, leveraging the expertise of Nigerian researchers worldwide while concurrently nurturing homegrown talent and innovation in AI.
