Among the new generation of modern-day Griots blazing the horizon and making remarkable impact on the global stage is Nigerian-American spoken-word artist Keney Young-Odor, popularly known as Kendryk Youngblood. As a testament to his rising profile, Youngblood earlier in the year featured prominently at Brandon Leake’s acclaimed “In Real Life” Concert held at Delta College’s Atherton Auditorium on February 7, 2026, in California before an audience of nearly 1,500 people.
The event brought together some of America’s finest poets and performers in a celebration of creativity and artistic excellence.
Youngblood’s participation came through a personal invitation from Brandon Leake himself, one of the most celebrated and recognizable spoken-word poets in the United States and winner of America’s Got Talent.
For Kendryk Youngblood, the invitation represented both a significant professional milestone and one of the greatest opportunities of his artistic career. The collaboration also saw Youngblood working alongside Brandon Leake, music producer Fariss Ryan, and fellow poets Red Lion and Lady Kay in crafting and recording both individual and group performances for the concert. The outcome was a deeply engaging showcase of poetic brilliance, emotional storytelling, and creative synergy.
A proud Nigerian – American, with deep African roots, Kendryk Youngblood embodies the essence of the modern African Griot, his poetry often reflects his heritage, Christian faith, personal experiences, values and African identity. Though based in the United States, his lineage traces back to Delta State, Nigeria, through his parents, Dr. Richard Young and Mrs. Vivian Young.
Youngblood attended the University of Houston, where he studied Biology while nurturing a profound passion for English literature and poetry. He served as a brand ambassador for Poet Life and was formerly a member of the University of Houston’s renowned poetry slam team, UH Coogslam, which earned fourth place nationally at the Collegiate Union Poetry Slam Invitational (CUPSI) in April 2019.
His literary works have appeared in notable publications including the University of Houston’s Shards Magazine, Defunkt Magazine, Poet’s Choice, and Welter at the University of Baltimore. He is also the author of the self-published poetry collection, “The Spoken Word Bible: Poems Inspired by Scripture to Encourage Faith and Worship.” In addition to his writing and performances, Youngblood previously served as poetry editor for the Houston-based literary journal Space City Underground Magazine.
He currently hosts The Mosaic, a dynamic creative showcase featuring poets, singers, rappers, painters, instrumentalists, and other artists united by a mission to glorify God, inspire creativity, and uplift audiences through artistic expression.
Beyond the stage, Kendryk Youngblood also serves as one of the ministry leaders of Urban Hymnal, a Houston-based Christian creative organization committed to empowering faith-driven artists and communities.
His final performance at the “In Real Life” concert was met with a thunderous standing ovation from the audience; a fitting recognition of an artist whose voice, passion, and cultural authenticity continue to resonate far beyond the stage.
