A delegation of approximately 85 global medical professionals, scientists, and policymakers participating in Harvard University’s “Science of Defeating Malaria” leadership development course has commended the establishment of the NASENI-TROMENT Biotechnologies factory as pivotal to eradicating malaria and infectious diseases in Nigeria and across Africa.
The team expressed admiration for the multi-million dollar facility during a tour on Sunday, June 7, 2026, noting that the creation of a 100 percent Nigerian-owned diagnostic brand is a significant step forward for the continent’s healthcare sector.
In a presentation to the visiting delegation, the Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of NASENI-TROMENT Biotechnologies, Mr. Selim Hani, explained that the factory is the result of a strategic partnership between the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) and Troment Nigeria Limited. The collaboration is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare sovereignty through the local production of diagnostic technologies.
“This facility built from ground zero in the last 18 months focuses on manufacturing of RDTs and in-vitro diagnostic (IVD) products, enabling early detection of major infectious and public health diseases,” Hani stated.
He disclosed that diagnostic test kits under the N-CheckUP brand will be produced to test for malaria, Hepatitis B and C, HIV ½, pregnancy, COVID-19 antigen, typhoid, syphilis, blood glucose, among others.
Hani further revealed that the factory is designed to produce 600 million diagnostic kits annually. “It will reduce Nigeria’s and West Africa’s reliance on imported medical diagnostics while improving accessibility and affordability across the country and the African region,” he added.
The Technical Partner of NASENI-Troment Biotechnologies, Dr. Engin Narinc, described the facility as Africa’s first fully localized Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) kit factory.
“From concept to full-scale launch, our end-to-end production process is designed to deliver world-class diagnostic solutions built entirely in Africa, for Africa,” Narinc said.
The team was led by Professor Dyann F. Wirth of Harvard University, one of the world’s leading malariologists, who guided the delegation on a tour of the various sections of the factory.
“This is an amazing facility that would add value to the eradication of malaria and other public health diseases in Nigeria and the continent,” Professor Wirth said.
The visiting “Science of Defeating Malaria” leadership development course and initiative is currently holding its programme from June 7 to 13, 2026, in Abuja, Nigeria. The initiative trains global health professionals, scientists, and policymakers in strategies to eliminate and eradicate malaria across affected regions worldwide.
The tour of the NASENI-Troment facility represents a recognition of Nigeria’s growing capacity to contribute to global health security through local innovation and manufacturing.
