In a groundbreaking moment for the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the FCT Council has elected its first female chairman in a 43-year history traditionally dominated by male candidates. Grace Ike, a journalist from the Advocate Broadcasting Network (ADBN), shattered the gender barrier with her unopposed election to the prestigious position on Wednesday.
The election, which took place under tight security, was witnessed by a large turnout of journalists from various media organizations in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Alongside Ike, other executive members were also sworn in, including Yahaya Ndambabo of Voice of Nigeria (VON) as Vice Chairman, Jide Oyekunle of Independent Newspaper as Secretary, and Sandra Udeike of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) as Treasurer.

The event was overseen by officials from the NUJ National Secretariat, and the newly elected executive will serve for a three-year term. A by-election will be held to fill the vacant positions.
In her inaugural speech, Grace Ike expressed gratitude and excitement, marking the beginning of a “new dawn” for the FCT journalists. She emphasized her commitment to bringing innovative projects aimed at improving the welfare of union members.
“I stand before you today as your elected Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council with immense gratitude and a profound sense of responsibility,” she said. “I thank you for the trust and confidence you have placed in me. Together, we shall chart a course toward unity, progress, and excellence for our union.”
Ike also extended her congratulations to Alhaji Yahya Alhassan, the newly elected NUJ National President, and pledged the FCT Council’s support in advancing the profession’s ideals.
Acknowledging the critical role women played in her success, she thanked the women of the council for their unwavering support and resilience throughout her campaign.
“Your courage, resilience, and support were pivotal to this victory,” Ike said, quoting leadership expert John C. Maxwell: “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.”
Prior to this election, Grace Ike had served as the immediate past Chairperson of the House of Representatives Press Corps and Vice Chairman of the FCT Correspondents Chapel. She has also held various positions at Independent Television (ITV) and Silverbird Television, demonstrating her extensive experience in the media sector.
