NICO Chief Advocates for Cultural Integration as Nigeria Celebrates World Culture Day

As the world marks the 2024 World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, also known as World Culture Day, Otunba Biodun Ajiboye, Executive Secretary/CEO of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO), has called for Nigerians to prioritize culture in the nation’s developmental processes.

In a statement issued by Caleb Nor of the Media Unit, Ajiboye emphasized the significance of this day as an opportunity to highlight the value and potential of culture in fostering peaceful co-existence and sustainable development. He noted that cultural diversity is particularly crucial in a country like Nigeria, known for its ethnic and religious plurality.

Ajiboye attributed the current social issues plaguing various parts of Nigeria to a neglect of cultural values. He stressed the need to campaign for the return of these cultural values, especially among the younger generation, to influence their behavior positively.

“Only by appreciating the importance of intercultural interaction, diversity, and inclusion, and recognizing culture as a key to societal peace, can Nigeria achieve sustainable development and peaceful co-existence,” Ajiboye stated.

World Culture Day is celebrated globally on May 21st each year, following a declaration by the United Nations General Assembly in 2002, after the adoption of the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity by UNESCO in 2001. This declaration recognizes cultural diversity as essential for global economic growth and the intellectual, emotional, moral, and spiritual well-being of people worldwide.

Ajiboye concluded by urging Nigeria to seize the opportunity presented by World Culture Day to enhance its cultural appreciation and development.
