Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State, has received a finished Information Communication Technology (ICT) Centre from the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC).
According to reports, the University is one of four geopolitical zones to benefit from the NCC’s generosity, with the University of Port Harcourt (South South), Federal University of Technology Minna (North West), and another in the North East Zone being the others.
The ultramodern ICT Centre is equipped with 100 high-performance computers, a server room, an external power generator, and a solar system to supplement and augment power supply.
Professor Charles Esimone, the vice chancellor, expressed joy that UNIZIK is one of the institutions that has benefited from the NCC’s generosity during the official handover last week.
Esimone stated that the institution was aware of the demands placed on it in terms of teaching and research, and that the institution would explore the possibility of a fluid partnership with NCC by effectively utilizing the ICT Centre, which would aid digital processes such as Computer-Based Testing (CBT), transcripts, hotel accommodations, and other ICT-based activities.
Mr Kenneth Uzoekwe, an NCC official, indicated that the ICT Centre was a Federal Government initiative through the NCC as part of the agency’s responsibility to bridge the digital divide, encourage growth, and breed technology clusters.
According to him, the ICT Centre will improve Research and Development, which will be able to push high-tech software such as engineering design, science, and programming to the next level.
Even though the center contains a Central Processing Unit and a server, Uzoekwe emphasized that the system might be improved to improve its capabilities.
Mr. Sam Onwuemena, director of Works Services; Dr. Azubuike Aniedo, director of MICTU (Software); and Mr. Osita Paul Okafor, deputy director of Physical Planning, were also present for the handover.
Others are Chief Ken Chukwurah, the chief safety officer; Mrs Chika Eneh, the director of information and public relations; and Professor Chike Okoye, the university orator.
