Tim Akano Honored with Distinguished Alumni Awards from OAU and Baptist Day School

Renowned entrepreneur, technologist, and philanthropist, Mr. Tim Akano, has been honored with Distinguished Alumnus Awards from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and Baptist Day School, Oluponna. The awards, both conferred in November 2025, recognize his lifelong contributions to education, mentorship, technology, and community development.

An OAU graduate of the Class of 1983, Akano was celebrated for his global impact in entrepreneurship and innovation, as well as his sustained support for students. In 2023, he awarded ₦60 million in scholarships to 1,000 OAU students to study artificial intelligence. He continues to mentor five students annually from the Department of International Relations through a structured mentorship initiative.

At Baptist Day School, Oluponna, Akano made history as the first alumnus to receive the Distinguished Alumnus Award since the school’s establishment in the 1930s. During a recent visit, he inspected several infrastructure projects funded by the Tim Akano Foundation, including a borehole, modern toilets for staff and pupils, and a perimeter fence with a gate. The fence has ended disturbances from herdsmen grazing on school grounds and significantly improved security.

The school principal recalled that before the fence was erected, a nine-year-old pupil was kidnapped on the premises and never found. Since its completion three years ago, no further kidnappings have occurred. Enrollment has also risen sharply, with over 30 new pupils admitted in 2025 alone.

To further support the school, the Foundation pledged a grass-cutting machine to maintain the compound and reduce risks such as snake bites. It also committed to sponsoring the secondary education of the top 10 graduating pupils each year and introduced a monthly cash incentive for all teachers to supplement their government salaries.

In a symbolic moment, Akano showed pupils his 1975 Primary School Leaving Certificate from the same school, encouraging them to strive for greater achievements. In gratitude, the school presented him with the Distinguished Alumnus Award.

The dual honors highlight Akano’s enduring commitment to bridging education, opportunity, and societal progress.
