Telecoms Union Calls Off Planned Strike

Telecoms Union Calls Off Planned Strike

The Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PTECSSAN) has decided to suspend its scheduled strike, which was set to commence on Thursday. The decision comes after successful negotiations with the subcontractors involved in the dispute, as outlined in a statement signed by the union’s General Secretary, Okonu Abdullahi.

Initially slated to begin on April 4, 2024, the indefinite strike was announced due to unresolved issues with subcontractors affiliated with Huawei Technologies Nigeria Ltd. These subcontractors included Reime Group, Allstream Energy Solutions Ltd., Uppercrest Ltd., Tyllium Nigeria Ltd., and Specific Tools and Techniques Ltd.

Following discussions held at the union’s secretariat, agreements were reached with the subcontractors. Key agreements included the recognition of employees’ rights to associate freely with the union and the implementation of health facilities in line with the National Health Insurance Scheme for employees and their families.

PTECSSAN’s demands encompassed the immediate recognition of fundamental rights, acknowledgment of the union as the official negotiating body, proper remittance of membership dues, regularization of employment for union members involved in Huawei projects, compliance with pension and health insurance regulations, and the initiation of negotiations for a collective bargaining agreement.

Despite efforts by the Ministry of Labour and Employment to mediate through conciliatory meetings, the companies initially failed to engage constructively. However, with the agreements now in place, the planned strike has been called off, providing a resolution to the dispute.
