Kemisola Bolarinwa, a Nigerian robotics and embedded systems engineer, has developed a groundbreaking invention: a smart bra designed to detect early-stage breast cancer before symptoms arise. Bolarinwa, the founder and CEO of Nextwear Technologies, created the prototype of the smart bra in February 2022, driven by the loss of a loved one to breast cancer in 2017.
Inspired by her aunt’s battle with the disease, Bolarinwa recognized the need for innovative solutions in breast cancer detection. Her invention repurposes ultrasound technology into a compact wearable device, utilizing nanotechnology to shrink down the ultrasound machine to a portable size. The smart bra employs a Doppler ultrasound system to detect lumps by bouncing high-frequency sound waves off the body, distinguishing it from traditional ultrasound machines that generate images of scanned areas.
Despite the significant progress achieved with the prototype, Bolarinwa acknowledges that further development and extensive clinical trials are necessary before the smart bra can be mass-produced. She aims for commercialization between the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023.

In addition to her role as an inventor, Bolarinwa is a fervent advocate for increasing female participation in STEM fields. She emphasizes the importance of research in driving effective solutions to societal challenges and laments the lack of adequate research organizations in Africa, particularly in deep tech areas.
Bolarinwa holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical, Electronics, and Communications Engineering and boasts over 10 years of experience in technology. She is deeply committed to empowering women in ICT through her nonprofit organization, Women In ICT Foundation, which focuses on providing technology education and leadership opportunities for women and young girls.
Through her innovative spirit and dedication to promoting gender equality in STEM, Bolarinwa is pioneering advancements in breast cancer detection while inspiring the next generation of female technologists in Nigeria and beyond.
