Sidi Ould Tah Elected as New AfDB President, Succeeding Akinwumi Adesina

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has elected Sidi Ould Tah of Mauritania as its new president, marking the end of a decade-long leadership tenure by Nigeria’s Akinwumi Adesina.

Tah emerged victorious during the bank’s annual meetings held on Thursday in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. He will formally assume office on September 1, 2025.

The newly elected president will take over from Adesina, who first assumed the role in 2015 and served two consecutive five-year terms. Under AfDB rules, Adesina was not eligible for a third term.

Sidi Ould Tah, widely regarded for his background in finance and development, is expected to continue driving the bank’s mission of promoting sustainable economic growth and reducing poverty across Africa.

More details about the election outcome and Tah’s strategic priorities are expected to be released in the coming days.
