Shettima Emphasizes Priority on Digital Technology and Clean Energy for Economic Diversification

Vice President Kashim Shettima has emphasized Nigeria’s focus on digital technology, the outsourcing industry, and the clean energy sector to attract investments in its energy transition plan and economic diversification agenda. Shettima discussed these priorities during a meeting with Denmark’s Minister for Development Cooperation and Global Climate Policy, Mr. Dan Jorgensen.

Highlighting Nigeria’s climate objectives, Shettima noted the declining significance of the oil economy, leading to increased emphasis on digital technology, clean energy, and other sectors. He expressed the need for investments in these areas to explore alternatives and foster partnerships and collaborations.

Shettima acknowledged Nigeria’s population strength as a crucial resource for Africa’s transformation, emphasizing the role of green and sustainable energy in expediting the continent’s development. He sought the support of the Danish Government and the Global Centre on Adaptation for Africa and Nigeria’s Climate Action, particularly in accelerating climate action and focusing on vulnerable populations in Africa.

The Vice President praised Denmark for its commitment to global climate action and called for mutually beneficial partnerships. He addressed Nigeria’s firm stance against military coups, emphasizing the country’s role as a beacon of hope and stability in the West African region.

Danish Minister Dan Jorgensen commended Nigeria’s leadership and commitment to climate sustainability, expressing admiration for the collaboration opportunities between Denmark and Nigeria. He highlighted the shared understanding on climate action and the importance of a just transition in moving towards renewable energy sources.

Jorgensen emphasized the need for regular assessments of the needs of vulnerable groups to ensure a just transition. He looked forward to signing a Memorandum of Understanding between Denmark and Nigeria on energy transition, outlining the framework for future collaboration.

Nigeria’s Minister of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, stressed the government’s commitment to addressing climate change and advocated for cross-cultural collaborations with Denmark in this regard.
