Remita Crosses ₦60 Trillion in Annual Transactions, Eyes Bold Pan-African Expansion

Remita, Nigeria’s leading payment technology platform developed by SystemSpecs, is setting its sights on a bold new chapter with plans for Pan-African expansion. The platform, which started as a payroll feature in a human resources application, has evolved into a powerful financial ecosystem processing over ₦60 trillion in annual transactions.

This milestone was revealed by Mr. Deremi Atanda, Managing Director and CEO of Remita Payment Services Limited, in an exclusive interview . “We’ve become an ecosystem of rails, products, and services—robust,” Atanda said. “Every year we process in excess of ₦60 trillion in transactions, and this can only grow, especially as we begin to think of a vibrant Pan-African expansion. We’re at the fringe of that.”

Atanda traced Remita’s origins to a simple remittance function within an HR/payroll system. “It was all about making it easier to pay salaries,” he explained. “That’s where the name ‘Remita’ came from—short for ‘remittance.’ We simply dropped a ‘T’ and added an ‘A.’

The company’s logo, featuring three ascending dots, reflects its growth from a feature to a full-fledged product, and now a cornerstone of Nigeria’s financial infrastructure.

Remita has played a key role in public and private sector payment solutions, notably supporting Nigeria’s Treasury Single Account (TSA) and becoming a trusted platform for government and enterprise payment needs.

Now, with its strong domestic foundation and growing transaction volume, Remita is preparing to expand into new African markets, bringing its experience in digital payments, financial inclusion, and public sector innovation to a broader continental audience.
