Reports circulating on Nigerian social media suggesting that Qatar had imposed a travel ban on Nigerian men traveling alone have been officially debunked.
According to the Qatar Ministry of Interior, there are no new restrictions for Nigerians seeking to visit the country. A representative from the ministry’s visa section confirmed to the BBC that the application process remains unchanged for all travelers, including single men.
The clarification follows viral claims that Qatar was denying visas to male applicants unless they were traveling with their families and that only females or families could obtain visas, provided they booked five-star hotels and return tickets.
The alleged notice was said to have originated from Discover Qatar, a tourism management company that works with travel agencies in Nigeria. The company reportedly cited “frequent cases of overstays by Nigerian travelers” as justification for the purported restriction.
However, Qatar’s official Hayya e-visa platform confirmed there are no suspensions or changes to existing procedures. “Any updates will be announced on our official platforms,” the statement said.
Qatar has seen a surge in Nigerian visitors in recent years, partly due to diplomatic tensions between Nigeria and the UAE from 2021 to 2024 that restricted travel options. The Gulf nation has grown into a preferred destination for Nigerians hosting social events, corporate meetings, and leisure trips.
This clarification comes amid a wider conversation on global visa restrictions affecting African travelers. In July 2025, the US introduced a policy limiting non-immigrant visas for Nigeria, Cameroon, Ethiopia, and Ghana to single-entry, three-month validity. Nigeria has rejected the US justification of “reciprocity,” noting that it continues to issue US nationals five-year multiple-entry visas.
Separately, Nigeria recently reached an agreement with the UAE to resume visa issuance for Nigerian passport holders after a two-year suspension.
