Paris Olympic: Nigerians Abroad Win Medals for Other Countries

For the eighth time in Olympic history, Nigeria’s athletes returned home without a single medal after the conclusion of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. A total of 88 athletes represented Nigeria across 12 sports, but despite their efforts, none managed to make it to the podium.

The country’s last hope for a medal was dashed when Hannah Reuben lost her Women’s Freestyle 76kg match to Mongolia’s Enkh-Amaryn Davaanasan in the round of 16, ending what has been Nigeria’s worst Olympic outing since London 2012.

However, several athletes of Nigerian descent who represented other countries achieved remarkable success at the Paris Olympics:

Salwa Eid Naser (Bahrain):
Originally known as Ebelechukwu Agbapuonwu, Salwa Eid Naser won a silver medal in the women’s 400m event for Bahrain. She began her athletic career in Nigeria, participating in the 2013 School Sports in Port Harcourt and the National Youth Games in Ilorin before moving to Bahrain at the age of 15. She later converted to Islam and changed her name.

Yemisi Ogunleye (Germany):
Yemisi Ogunleye, born to a Nigerian father and a European mother in Germany, claimed a gold medal in shot put at the Paris Olympics. This victory marked Germany’s first gold in the event since Astrid Kumbernuss in 1996. Although she identifies with her German roots, Ogunleye is proud of her Nigerian heritage.

Annette Echikunwoke (United States):
Annette Echikunwoke initially planned to represent Nigeria at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics but was ruled ineligible due to an administrative oversight by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria. She then switched her allegiance to the United States and made history by winning a silver medal in the hammer throw, becoming the first American woman to achieve this feat.

Samuel Omorodion (Spain):
A professional footballer of Nigerian descent, Samuel Omorodion played a crucial role in Spain’s men’s football team, which secured the gold medal. Although he missed the final match due to his impending transfer from Atletico Madrid to Chelsea, his contributions were vital to the team’s success.

Edrice Femi “Bam” Adebayo (United States):
Bam Adebayo, an American professional basketball player with Nigerian roots, won a gold medal with the U.S. Olympic basketball team. Adebayo, who plays for the Miami Heat in the NBA, is a three-time NBA All-Star and has also been named to the NBA All-Defensive Team five times. He previously won a gold medal with the U.S. team at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

While Nigeria’s own athletes struggled in Paris, these individuals of Nigerian descent showcased their talent on the world stage, bringing pride to their respective adopted countries.
