The National Universities Commission (NUC) has revealed the existence of over 37 illegal universities operating in Nigeria. Chris Maiyaki, the Acting Secretary of the NUC, shared this information during a media briefing in Abuja.
Maiyaki clarified that actions have been taken, including arrests, to address the issue of these illegal institutions. The Department of State Services played a role in the clampdown on these unauthorized universities.
Highlighting the seriousness of the matter, Maiyaki urged parents to visit the commission’s website to verify the legitimacy of universities to ensure their children do not fall victim to these unaccredited institutions.
This revelation comes in the wake of the suspension of accreditation and evaluation of degree certificates from Benin Republic and Togo. The decision followed an investigative report by the Daily Nigerian Newspaper titled “UNDERCOVER: How DAILY NIGERIAN reporter bagged Cotonou varsity degree in 6 weeks.”
The undercover journalist detailed the expedited process of obtaining a degree from a university in Benin Republic in under two months, including deployment for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
