NSIA and NSP Collaborate to Launch Shiroro Solar Generating Company

Vice President Kashim Shettima affirmed Nigeria’s commitment to its energy transition journey towards clean and renewable energy solutions under the Bola Tinubu administration. He made this declaration during the signing of a joint venture agreement for the establishment of the Shiroro Generating Company, Nigeria’s pioneering 20MW On-grid Solar-Hydro Hybrid project, between the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and North-South Power Company Ltd.

The event, held at the Aso Rock Villa, was hailed as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s energy transition journey, with Vice President Shettima emphasizing the government’s unwavering support for initiatives driving economic growth, enhancing energy security, and safeguarding the environment.

The Shiroro Generating Company, a joint venture project, will invest in a 20MW solar-hydro hybrid project in Shiroro, Niger State. This pilot project, embedded within a larger 300MW solar program, will be co-located within NSP’s existing 600MW Shiroro Hydroelectric Power Plant concession area.

Vice President Shettima underscored the importance of diversifying Nigeria’s energy sources, reducing carbon footprints, and ensuring a sustainable future. He praised the project’s innovative approach to hybridizing power in solar and hydro, predicting its potential to attract further investments and catalyze the realization of other hydro-solar projects.

The Minister of Power, Mr. Adebayo Adelabu, highlighted the initiative’s alignment with critical priorities, aiming to increase energy output and diversify into renewable energy. MD/CEO of NSIA, Mr. Aminu Umar-Sadiq, emphasized the partnership’s role in deepening Nigeria’s clean energy portfolio and creating jobs.

Similarly, Olubunmi Peters, Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of North South Power Company Limited, affirmed the company’s dedication to renewable energy solutions, describing the project as a testament to their focus on economic growth while upholding environmental and social responsibility standards.

The signing ceremony, witnessed by officials from NSIA, North-South Power, and other stakeholders in the power sector, signals a significant step towards Nigeria’s transition to clean and sustainable energy sources.
