Nine Banks’ USSD Codes to Be Disconnected Over N160 Billion Debt

Nine Banks’ USSD Codes to Be Disconnected Over N160 Billion Debt

Telecommunication companies in Nigeria, acting under the directive of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), will cut off the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) access for nine banks starting from January 27, 2025. The decision comes after these banks failed to settle a mounting debt of N160 billion that has been accruing since 2019.

In a notice issued on Wednesday, the NCC outlined the affected banks and their USSD codes:

Fidelity Bank Plc (770)
First City Monument Bank (329)
Jaiz Bank Plc (773)
Polaris Bank Limited (833)
Sterling Bank Limited (822)
United Bank for Africa Plc (919)
Unity Bank Plc (7799)
Wema Bank Plc (945)
Zenith Bank Plc (966)
The Commission stated that if the banks do not settle the debt by January 27, their USSD services will be disconnected, potentially disrupting access to mobile banking platforms for millions of customers.

While the initial debt stood at N200 billion, the NCC confirmed that nine banks have made payments, reducing the total outstanding debt to N160 billion. The Commission emphasized its commitment to protecting consumers, warning that customers may be unable to access the USSD platforms of the affected banks after the deadline.

This move comes as part of the ongoing efforts by the NCC to address the financial obligations between banks and telecommunications providers regarding USSD services.
