The Nigerian passport has been ranked 94th out of 199 countries in the latest Henley Passport Index, highlighting the limited global travel options available to Nigerian citizens. The ranking, released yesterday, shows that Nigerian passport holders can access only 46 destinations without a visa.
The Henley Passport Index ranks passports based on the number of destinations their holders can visit visa-free. The ranking is compiled using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and enhanced by additional research.
Nigeria’s passport ranks alongside those of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar, and Ethiopia, reflecting a limited level of global mobility. This has restricted the ease of international travel for many Nigerians, with broader implications for personal and economic opportunities abroad.
The report revealed the most powerful passports in the world:
• 1st place: Singapore, whose citizens enjoy visa-free access to 195 destinations.
• 2nd place: Japan, with access to 193 destinations.
• 3rd place: Countries like Germany, France, and South Korea, with access to 192 destinations.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan remains at the bottom of the rankings, with its passport providing visa-free access to only a few countries.

The report also highlighted the growing inequality in global mobility. While some nations, like the UAE, have made significant strides through active diplomatic engagement, others, including Nigeria, face challenges in negotiating visa-free travel agreements.
“The gap between powerful and weak passports is widening,” the report noted.
Dr. Christian Kaelin, Chairman of Henley & Partners, emphasized the importance of addressing global mobility issues in the face of increasing political instability and displacement due to natural disasters.
Kaelin noted that enhancing mobility for citizens could open up economic and social opportunities, transforming lives and strengthening international ties.
To improve its ranking, Nigeria has been urged to pursue stronger diplomatic relations and enter into more visa-free agreements with other countries. These steps would not only enhance global access for Nigerians but also boost the country’s international standing.
For now, the limited mobility of Nigerian passport holders remains a challenge, underscoring the need for a more focused approach to improving international travel opportunities for its citizens.
