Nigerian Afrobeats artists are making a significant impact on the global music scene, and the nominations and big win at the 67th Grammy Awards nominations are a testament to that.
The ceremony which took place on February 2, 2025, at the Arena in Los Angeles was a night to remember for Afrobeats lovers as Nigerian Afrobeats star, Tems made history by winning a Grammy for the hit song “Love Me JeJe,” marking her second Grammy win.
Afrobeats, a genre that has gained immense popularity globally in recent years, had over six nominated artists from Nigeria including: Burna Boy, nominated for Best African Music Performance for “Higher”; Asake, nominated for Best African Music Performance for “MMS” (feat. Wizkid); Yemi Alade, nominated for Best African Music Performance for “Tomorrow”; Wizkid, nominated for Best African Music Performance for “MMS” (feat. Asake); Davido, nominated for Best African Music Performance for “Sensational” (feat. Chris Brown and Lojay); Rema, nominated for Best Global Music Album for “Heis”; and Tems, nominated for Best R&B Song for “Burning” and Best African Music Performance for “Love Me JeJe.”
Tems’ acceptance speech was heartfelt, as she thanked her team and dedicated the award to her mother, whose birthday coincided with the ceremony.
Other notable winners at the 67th Grammy Awards include: Best New Artist won by Chappell Roan, Record of the Year won by Kendrick Lamar for “Not Like Us,” Album of the Year won by Beyoncé for “Cowboy Carter,” making her the first Black woman to win the top prize in the 21st century, Best Latin Pop Album won by Shakira for “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” amongst others.
These wins showcase the diversity and talent of artists across various genres, and Afrobeats is certainly making its mark bringing Africa to the limelight and and Nigerian Afrobeats stars continue to shine on the global music scene.
