Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, announced a substantial boost in monthly revenue collection, surging from N202 billion to N333.9 billion in the past four months. This achievement was disclosed during a national workshop on legislative compliance held in Abuja, focusing on the importance of legislative compliance in deepening democracy and promoting good governance.

Adeniyi noted that during the first half of the year, the service had been collecting an average monthly revenue of N202 billion. However, between July and October, there was a remarkable increase, with monthly revenue collection reaching N333.9 billion, reflecting a significant 65.5% rise.
He attributed this success to the Customs’ collaboration with the National Assembly, which led to the review and enhancement of tariff structures and regulations. This partnership has enabled the Nigeria Customs Service to optimize its revenue collection, ensuring that funds are available for national development projects.
Adeniyi also highlighted that the Customs Service faces challenges, such as budgetary constraints that can limit its ability to enforce compliance effectively. These constraints affect the acquisition of modern technology, the organization of training, and the recruitment of personnel required for effective enforcement. Inadequate infrastructure and technology at border posts can also impede the Customs Service’s ability to inspect and regulate trade effectively, potentially leading to noncompliance.
