NICO Criticizes Cultural Negligence by Foreign Airlines Operating in Nigerian Airspace

The Executive Secretary/CEO of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO), Otunba Biodun Ajiboye, has expressed strong disapproval regarding the neglect of Nigerian cultural preferences by foreign airlines operating within Nigerian airspace.

In a statement signed by Caleb Nor, Media Assistant to the Executive Secretary/CEO of NICO, Otunba Ajiboye, who recently returned to Nigeria on a foreign airline, highlighted the lack of consideration for local cuisines in the in-flight meal options provided to passengers. He argued that Nigerian passengers should have the option to choose indigenous meals rather than being compelled to consume exclusively foreign dishes.

Ajiboye emphasized that offering indigenous cuisines onboard would significantly enhance cultural diplomacy. He pointed out that respecting Nigerian culture through meal offerings does not impose on foreign passengers but instead demonstrates respect for the local culture and its people.

He asserted that culture plays a crucial role in governance and development, warning that any country that undermines its culture risks stagnation. Ajiboye stressed the importance of cultural recognition and noted that NICO’s mandate includes promoting Nigerian culture both locally and internationally.

Drawing a comparison with Chinese cultural practices, Ajiboye observed that the widespread availability of Chinese cuisine globally is a testament to effective cultural diplomacy. He argued that if foreign airlines profit from Nigerian passengers, they should also respect and promote Nigerian culture.

Ajiboye called on the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo SAN, to recognize the significance of this issue and consider implementing policies that mandate the inclusion of local meal options on foreign airlines operating in Nigeria.
