New NCC Boss, Maida Commits to President Tinubu’s Vision on Digital Economy

The newly appointed Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, recently articulated his dedication to advancing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for the digital economy. In an address to the Commission’s Senior Management team, Maida emphasized the necessity of focusing on ensuring affordable and reliable broadband services accessible to all Nigerians.

He stressed the significance of establishing robust broadband infrastructure to facilitate digital transactions and serve as a foundation for various socio-economic initiatives and e-governance. Acknowledging the contributions of previous NCC chiefs to the development of a resilient telecoms industry, Dr. Maida pledged to prioritize the improvement of network quality of service.

He expressed his commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s and the Ministry of Communications, Innovations, and Digital Economy’s objectives. Stressing the increasing reliance on digital platforms, Maida highlighted the critical need to alleviate the strain on telecom infrastructure. He underscored President Tinubu’s aspiration to enhance broadband penetration to 70% and cover 90% of the population by 2025, emphasizing the importance of addressing challenges such as Right of Way (RoW) issues and ensuring the security of telecom infrastructure.

Furthermore, Dr. Maida emphasized the alignment of the Commission’s strategies with the overarching agendas outlined by the Minister of Communications, Innovations, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, and President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda. He emphasized the Commission’s adherence to key performance indicators (KPIs) that feed into the Minister’s and the President’s KPIs, focusing on empowering three million Nigerians digitally and supporting the government’s drive for youth empowerment.

Notably, he highlighted the importance of bolstering the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI) as a training institution to realize the Ministry’s plan for digital skills and entrepreneurship. Additionally, Dr. Maida stressed the critical role of effective spectrum management in facilitating the envisioned digital connectivity agenda, crucial for the widespread deployment of services to both citizens and businesses.

While commending the efforts of his predecessors and the Commission’s staff in fostering digital transformation, he urged the team to unite with a sense of purpose to advance President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, which recognizes the pivotal role of a thriving digital economy in fostering sustainable development and improving the quality of life for all Nigerians.
