The conference, hosted by the Nigeria Information Technology Reporters Association (NITRA) at CitiHeight Hotel in Lagos, brought together industry players to explore AI’s potential and address concerns about its impact on employment.
In his address, Dr. Akindeinde tackled the widespread misconception that AI will lead to massive job losses, emphasizing that AI is meant to complement human efforts, not replace them. “Whenever new technology emerges, there is always fear that it will disrupt industries and take jobs. Yes, AI is disruptive, but it does things faster, cheaper, and better,” he said. “I am here to assure Nigerians that AI will not take your job. It will make your work more efficient by automating repetitive tasks and enhancing your productivity.”
He pointed out that similar fears accompanied the introduction of the internet decades ago, yet it revolutionized the way information is consumed and jobs were created across various sectors. He likened the current AI revolution to the early days of the internet, which democratized information and transformed industries like journalism and entertainment.
Dr. Akindeinde stressed the importance of up-skilling in AI technology. “AI is still artificial intelligence, and it relies on human intelligence to function. The tasks AI excels at are those that humans find difficult, like analyzing large amounts of data or automating tedious processes. But AI still needs human input to operate effectively,” he explained. “Professionals in various sectors—journalists, lawyers, doctors, and others—must seek training to up-skill their knowledge in AI to remain competitive in the evolving digital landscape.”
He highlighted practical applications of AI that are already making a difference, such as AI tools for transcription, which can save hours of work for reporters, and AI systems that enhance productivity in industries like filmmaking and education.

Dr. Akindeinde also discussed AI’s potential in education, citing the ability of AI to translate educational content into local languages in real-time, allowing for more effective learning. He emphasized that Africa’s educational system needs to embrace AI to become more competitive globally. “With AI, we can deliver education in local languages and bridge the gap in learning. This is just one way AI can transform education in Nigeria and Africa at large,” he said.
Moreover, Dr. Akindeinde touched on the role AI can play in assisting vision-impaired individuals and improving public safety through AI-driven facial recognition technology. He underscored the need for professionals and regulators to understand AI in order to effectively harness its potential and ensure proper governance.
In conclusion, Dr. Akindeinde called for widespread adoption of AI across industries, urging Nigerian stakeholders to embrace this all-purpose technology. “AI is not just for tech experts; it’s for everyone. Just like the internet became a tool we all use, AI will be integrated into every industry. The sooner we understand and embrace it, the better equipped we will be to benefit from its transformative power.”
