The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has directed electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to replace faulty and obsolete meters for customers at no cost. This directive was detailed in a statement released on Monday.
The move comes amid reports of certain DisCos requiring customers to pay for the replacement of Unistar prepaid meters. NERC clarified that such actions violate Order No. NERC/246/2021, which mandates the structured replacement of faulty or outdated meters within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
The commission stated that DisCos are fully responsible for meter replacement costs, provided the damage was not caused by the customer. Additionally, no customer with a meter should be subjected to estimated billing under any circumstances.
“The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission is aware that some DisCos have instructed customers to apply and pay for meter replacements. This instruction contravenes the Commission’s regulations,” NERC emphasized.
Previously, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) directed Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) and Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDP) to halt their replacement of Unistar prepaid meters due to non-compliance with NERC’s orders.
The FCCPC reiterated that DisCos must adhere to industry regulations, including fair billing practices for unmetered customers, and urged energy consumers to report any violations via the commission’s helpline at 08119877785.
