NDPC Investigates Optasia Over Alleged Data Rights Violations

The National Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has launched a comprehensive investigation into the data processing practices of Optasia, operating in Nigeria as Nairtime Nigeria Ltd.

In a statement issued by Babatunde Bamigboye, head of Legal, Enforcement & Regulations, the Commission expressed serious concerns about Optasia’s use of privacy-invasive technologies for marketing, credit scoring, and other financial services.

The investigation will scrutinize how financial institutions, telecom companies, and insurance firms handle personal data for these purposes.

Dr. Vincent Olatunji, NDPC’s national commissioner, emphasized the need for data controllers and processors to ensure that third-party entities handling personal data are registered with the Commission. This initiative aims to enhance accountability, fortify data security, and protect Nigeria’s data sovereignty.
