NCC Boss, Maida Encourages Mobile Operators to Embrace Infrastructure Sharing and New Technologies

Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice-Chairman and CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), calls upon Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to prioritize infrastructure sharing and adopt new technologies to improve services while reducing operational costs.

At the recent West African Telecoms Infrastructure Summit and Exhibition in Lagos, Dr. Maida emphasized the importance of infrastructure sharing in addressing operational challenges and fostering growth and innovation in Nigeria’s telecom industry.

Highlighting the benefits of Infrastructure Sharing (IS), Dr. Maida outlined how it minimizes unnecessary duplication of infrastructure, reduces capital expenditure, and encourages a cost-oriented policy, ultimately benefiting all stakeholders in the telecom ecosystem.

The Commission’s updated guidelines on co-location and infrastructure sharing aim to harness economic advantages while minimizing environmental impact, paving the way for improved service delivery and expanded Internet coverage.

Dr. Maida also stressed the need for the telecom industry to embrace new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) to optimize networks, predict maintenance needs, and enhance customer service.

Furthermore, the Commission emphasized the importance of developing “smart infrastructure” to support applications like traffic management and public safety solutions, underscoring Nigeria’s role in technological advancements with the rollout of 5G technology and anticipation of the 6G revolution.
