NCC Announces New Tariff Plan: Nigerians Face Imminent Cost Hike For Calls, Data, SMS

Nigerians are bracing for increased expenses on mobile calls, data, and SMS following the Nigerian  Communications Commission’s (NCC) decision to unveil a new tariff plan for the telecommunications sector effective December 13, 2024.

This move, according to the NCC, is aimed at simplifying tariff structures and improving consumer experience across the industry.

Dr. Maida Wada, the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, made this announcement during an interactive session with the media in Abuja, represented by Mr. Reuben Muoka, the Director of Public Affairs.

Dr. Wada clarified that the revised release date of December 13 replaces the earlier scheduled date of October 27, which was postponed due to incomplete stakeholder consultations.

“As of December 13, 2024, a new tariff plan will be unveiled.

“We have engaged stakeholders extensively to gather their insights and ensure robust contributions,” Dr. Wada affirmed, highlighting the commission’s commitment to transparency and inclusive decision-making.

In a bid to streamline tariff offerings and foster fair competition, the NCC has directed telecom operators to streamline their tariff and promotional plans to a maximum of seven.

This directive aims to simplify choices for consumers, enhance transparency in pricing, and safeguard consumer interests from misleading promotions.

Dr. Wada emphasized, “With this measure, telecom consumers will benefit from clearer pricing structures, and misconceptions surrounding data and airtime usage will be minimized.
The NCC has been actively conducting awareness campaigns through various media channels to educate consumers about these changes.”

Addressing widespread concerns about data depletion, Dr. Wada referenced an NCC-conducted audit that revealed significant misconceptions among users regarding data consumption patterns, particularly across different types of Android devices.

He stressed the importance of public education to empower consumers with accurate information on optimizing their data usage.

Furthermore, the NCC has mandated all licensed telecom operators to update their contact details by January 9, 2025, in compliance with the Licensing Regulations 2019.

Mr. Muoka affirmed that adherence to these regulations is crucial for enhancing regulatory oversight and bolstering Nigeria’s telecommunications sector integrity.
He warned operators of potential penalties, including fines, suspension, or revocation of licenses, for non-compliance.

As the implementation date approaches, Nigerians are preparing for potential impacts on their communication expenses
