Several African internet connectivity providers are grappling with outages following multiple submarine cable cuts, causing significant disruptions to banking services and internet access.
Seacom, a prominent South African internet connectivity provider, has alerted its customers about a service-affecting outage via the West African Cable System, a vital submarine network.
Meanwhile, MainOne, a key internet provider for numerous Nigerian banks and internet service providers, has experienced a major fibre cut in Ghana. This incident has led to the disruption of services for many major Nigerian banks, rendering banking apps and USSD services inaccessible to customers.
Reports indicate that numerous users have encountered difficulties accessing banking apps and experiencing sluggish internet speeds since Thursday morning. Sterling Bank, one of Nigeria’s leading banks, has notified customers of challenges with online banking activities.

Lemfi, an African remittance startup, has also confirmed experiencing downtime due to the outage.
While a technical team is actively addressing the situation at MainOne, the company’s spokesperson declined to comment on the matter.
Seacom has disclosed that traffic is being rerouted via alternate paths to mitigate the impact, although services towards Europe from Maputo and South Africa remain vulnerable if these alternatives fail.
Beyond Nigeria, South African internet users are also grappling with slow speeds and unresponsive internet connections. Vodacom has confirmed that multiple subsea cable failures between South Africa and Europe are affecting various network providers.
The outage extends beyond these incidents, with several other submarine cables such as AAE1 and EIG experiencing outages across the African continent.
This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
