The Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN) is set to commemorate its 20th anniversary with a grand gala dinner on Friday, October 30, 2026, at the Landmark Events Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The celebration, tagged IXPN@20, will commence at 5:00 p.m. and bring together stakeholders across Nigeria’s information and communications technology sector to honour two decades of contributions to internet connectivity and digital infrastructure development.
The milestone offers an opportunity to reflect on IXPN’s role in strengthening Nigeria’s internet ecosystem, facilitating the local exchange of internet traffic, and supporting efforts to improve connectivity efficiency nationwide.
A Legacy Rooted in Collaboration
Established in 2006 by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in partnership with the Internet Service Providers Association of Nigeria (ISPAN), IXPN was created to reduce the cost of internet connectivity, lower latency, and encourage the local exchange of internet traffic.
As a neutral, not-for-profit internet exchange point, the organisation provides a platform for internet service providers, telecommunications operators, content delivery networks, and other network operators to exchange data directly, reducing the need to route domestic traffic through international networks.
Over the years, internet exchange infrastructure has become increasingly important to Nigeria’s digital economy, supporting the delivery of online services and contributing to efforts to improve network performance, connectivity efficiency, and the overall internet experience.
Two Decades of Advancing Local Traffic Exchange
Since its establishment, IXPN has played a pivotal role in advancing local internet traffic exchange, an important component of efforts to build a more efficient and resilient digital ecosystem in Nigeria.
By enabling networks to exchange domestic traffic locally, internet exchange points help reduce latency, improve data delivery, and potentially lower costs associated with international bandwidth.
These benefits have become increasingly significant as Nigeria experiences growing demand for digital financial services, cloud computing, e-commerce, online education, and other internet-dependent activities. The expansion of the digital economy has further highlighted the importance of reliable internet infrastructure in supporting businesses, educational institutions, government services, and individual users.
IXPN’s 20th anniversary therefore comes at a critical time, as stakeholders continue to explore ways to strengthen network infrastructure, improve internet affordability, and expand access to digital services.
Leadership and Institutional Growth
As IXPN marks this milestone, the leadership of its Chief Executive Officer, Muhammed Rudman, remains central to the organisation’s ongoing institutional journey and its efforts to support Nigeria’s internet infrastructure.
Under Rudman’s leadership, IXPN continues to operate within an evolving digital landscape in which efficient traffic exchange, network resilience, and improved connectivity are increasingly important to national economic development.
The organisation’s 20th anniversary provides an opportunity to highlight the contributions of its management, technical teams, network participants, and industry partners in sustaining local internet exchange infrastructure.
Recognising Industry Stakeholders and Media Contributions
A major highlight of the IXPN@20 celebration will be the recognition of individuals and organisations whose contributions have supported the growth of Nigeria’s internet ecosystem and digital infrastructure over the past two decades.
The recognition will extend to stakeholders across the ICT industry, including telecommunications operators, internet service providers, technology companies, industry partners, and other contributors whose efforts have helped advance internet connectivity and infrastructure development in Nigeria.
Media professionals will also be honoured for their contributions to internet journalism and reporting on Nigeria’s digital infrastructure. Through investigative reporting, industry analysis, and public-interest journalism, journalists have helped raise awareness of developments in internet connectivity, telecommunications, data infrastructure, and the broader digital economy.
As part of the celebration, IXPN will present the Distinguished Contribution to Internet Journalism Award to honour outstanding professional achievements and contributions to reporting on the internet and digital infrastructure sectors.
The recognition highlights the important role of the media in informing public discourse, explaining technological developments, and holding stakeholders accountable on issues affecting Nigeria’s digital transformation.
Looking Ahead: The Next Phase of Digital Growth
As Nigeria’s reliance on digital technologies continues to increase, the need for efficient, reliable, and affordable internet infrastructure remains a priority. The growth of online transactions, cloud-based services, digital communications, and other internet-dependent activities is placing greater demands on network capacity and resilience.
In this environment, internet exchange points can help improve the efficiency of domestic data traffic while supporting the broader development of Nigeria’s digital ecosystem. However, sustaining progress will require continued investment in infrastructure, stronger industry partnerships, and efforts to address challenges relating to network resilience, bandwidth demand, and digital inclusion.
For IXPN, the 20-year milestone represents both a celebration of its contributions to Nigeria’s internet development and an opportunity to consider the priorities that will shape its future. The organisation’s continued relevance will depend on its ability to support the evolving needs of network operators and contribute to a more efficient, interconnected, and resilient internet environment.
Celebrating Two Decades of Internet Exchange Development
The IXPN@20 Grand Gala Dinner will bring together stakeholders from Nigeria’s technology, telecommunications, and media communities to celebrate two decades of internet exchange development and recognise contributions to the country’s digital infrastructure.
The event will provide an opportunity to reflect on IXPN’s institutional journey, acknowledge the contributions of its leadership and industry partners, and celebrate the individuals and organisations whose work has supported the development of Nigeria’s internet ecosystem.
Scheduled for October 30, 2026, at the Landmark Events Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos, the celebration marks an important milestone in the evolution of Nigeria’s digital infrastructure.
As Nigeria looks towards the next phase of digital transformation, efficient internet infrastructure, sustained investment, and collaboration across the technology sector will remain essential to expanding opportunities for businesses, institutions, and millions of internet users.
