President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Sunday Akin Dare as his Special Adviser on Public Communication and Orientation, entrusting him with managing government communications and public engagement. Mr. Dare’s extensive career spans various roles in public service, media, and journalism, underscoring his experience and capability for this position.
Career and Experience
Sunday Dare served as Nigeria’s Minister of Youth and Sports Development from 2019 to 2023, where he implemented policies to enhance youth engagement and sports infrastructure. Before this, he was the Executive Commissioner for Stakeholder Management at the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) from 2016 to 2019. At the NCC, Dare played a critical role in overseeing the agency’s relations with key stakeholders, ensuring the regulatory body’s engagement with both public and private sectors.

Dare has long been associated with President Tinubu, having served as Chief of Staff and Special Adviser on Media during Tinubu’s tenure as the leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Earlier, in 2009, he was appointed Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of Information and Communications, where he was responsible for shaping media policies and overseeing public information initiatives.
From 2001 to 2009, Dare was the Chief of the Hausa Service at Voice of America (VOA) in Washington, D.C. He managed the production of broadcast content for West Africa and led a team of international journalists. His media career includes work as a correspondent for The Nation magazine in New York and a production editor for the European-backed Fourth Estate magazine during Nigeria’s military era. He was also among the founding members of The News and Tempo magazines, which played pivotal roles in journalism during Nigeria’s turbulent political landscape.
