Governor Sule Dissolves Nasarawa State Executive Council, Sacks SSG

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has dissolved the state executive council, including all commissioners, and terminated the appointment of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Barrister Muhammad Aliyu-Ubamdoma.

The announcement was made during an emergency executive meeting held at the Government House in Lafia on Friday, shortly after Vice President Kashim Shettima’s one-day working visit to the state to inaugurate various projects.

While the specific reasons for the dissolution remain unclear, a government insider noted that Governor Sule is known for restructuring the state’s administration. A similar dissolution of the executive council occurred in 2021, aimed at enhancing governance efficiency.

In a statement signed by Mohammed Iliyasu-Idde, Permanent Secretary for Cabinet Affairs and Special Services, the governor expressed gratitude to the outgoing council members for their contributions to the state’s development and wished them success in their future endeavors.

The statement directed the former commissioners to hand over ministry affairs and government assets to their respective permanent secretaries, while the SSG was instructed to transfer responsibilities to the Permanent Secretary for Cabinet Affairs and Special Services.

In July 2023, Governor Sule had submitted the names of 17 commissioner-nominees to the Nasarawa State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as part of his cabinet. The recent dissolution leaves citizens anticipating further details on the administration’s restructuring and its implications for governance in the state.
