Galaxy Backbone, REA Sign MoU to Deepen Digital and Energy Access Nationwide

In a bold move to bridge Nigeria’s digital and energy divide, Galaxy Backbone Limited (GBB) and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at driving inclusive development across underserved communities, higher institutions, and public institutions nationwide.

The strategic partnership was formalized during a signing ceremony held in Abuja, where the leadership of both government agencies reaffirmed their shared commitment to aligning technology infrastructure with reliable energy solutions.

Speaking at the event, Managing Director/CEO of Galaxy Backbone, Professor Ibrahim A. Adeyanju, described the agreement as “a landmark moment in Nigeria’s journey towards a digitally empowered, sustainably powered, and inclusively connected nation.”

He emphasized that while Galaxy Backbone’s core role is to provide secure digital infrastructure powering government operations, such digital transformation can only be sustained with reliable, accessible energy—particularly in remote and rural areas.

“This partnership exemplifies what is possible when two visionary institutions come together, united by a common mission to improve the lives of Nigerians,” Professor Adeyanju said.

Under the MoU, both agencies will collaborate on multiple high-impact projects, including:
• Solar electrification of GBB’s Metro Fibre sites in Abuja to enhance uninterrupted connectivity.
• Power supply to student hostels in tertiary institutions through the Fibre to Hostel Project, driven by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy (FMCIDE).
• Support for the 774 Local Government Digitization Initiative, beginning with six pilot LGAs.
• Provision of critical ICT infrastructure—including local area networks, access points, cloud services, and temporary internet connectivity—for REA offices nationwide.

REA’s Managing Director, Mr. Abba Aliyu, expressed optimism that the partnership will accelerate development in rural and peri-urban areas. He noted that by combining REA’s success in off-grid energy delivery with GBB’s national ICT backbone, the initiative will support improved governance, access to quality education, digital entrepreneurship, and healthcare services.

“This MoU will catalyze transformation in communities that have long been underserved. By powering digital access with sustainable energy, we are unlocking opportunities across all sectors,” Mr. Aliyu said.

The partnership aligns with the Renewed Hope Digital Transformation Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which envisions an inclusive digital economy supported by innovation, public sector efficiency, and sustainable infrastructure.

The event was witnessed by senior executives from both agencies and members of the press, signaling a new era of collaborative governance.

With this development, GBB and REA have laid the foundation for more integrated, efficient, and citizen-centered public service delivery—powered by technology and energy working in tandem.
