The ex-Director General/CEO of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Engr. Aliyu Abubakar Aziz, has received France’s prestigious award from the Secure Identity Alliance (SIA) in Paris. The SIA acknowledged Aziz as a founding member and the inaugural Chairman of the SIA Advisory Council, commending his exceptional contributions.

Aziz was praised for his pivotal role in establishing universal interoperability standards and influencing critical decisions that have had a significant impact on Nigeria and Africa. The SIA, a collaborative entity involving public and private sectors, along with academics in the identity industry, recognized Aziz’s advocacy for fair contractual agreements and technology services for NIMC and other technology-dependent agencies in Nigeria.
The Alliance highlighted Aziz’s influence on the European Economic Interest Groups under the SIA, emphasizing his role in shaping decisions for the benefit of Nigeria. The award carried words of encouragement, emphasizing Aziz’s untapped potential as an asset for the international community.

Established in 2019, the SIA aims to combat “vendor lock-in” and promote interoperability, fostering transparency with open standards. Aziz served as the inaugural Chairman until July 24, 2023, when Engr. Bisoye Coka-Odusote succeeded him. During the formal handover ceremony, Aziz emphasized the apolitical nature of the SIA and its commitment to ensuring identity solutions meet specific criteria before reaching Nigerian and African Governments.
Aziz’s legacy resonates as the SIA continues its mission to enhance global identity management and related solutions.
