The federal government of Nigeria has set up a National Duct Policy to hinder network providers from the unsystematic approach of setting cables across national infrastructure and damaging them in the process.
The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami made this information public following the Federal Executive Council(FEC) presided over by the Vice President, Yemi Osinbanjo where the National Child Online Protection Policy and Strategy and the Nigerian Data Protection Bill were also approved.
Pantami explains that there are a lot of challenges faced whenever they seek to build telecommunications infrastructure as a lot of damage is being done in several cities and towns in Nigeria, either to the roads or to the facilities due to lack of provision of duct or conduit during design or construction where the fiber might be placed.
The National Duct Policy, attempts to formalize the provision of ducts during construction at the federal, state, and local council levels and it allows shared infrastructure thereby making maintenance and repairs much easier.
